James J. Hoski, M.D.
Board-Certified Orthopedic Surgeon
Fellowship-Trained Spine Surgeon

Dr. Hoski is a board-certified orthopedic surgeon, fellowship-trained in spine. Dr. Hoski earned his undergraduate degree in biochemistry and went on to get his medical degree from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. He then completed an internship and residency at the University of South Florida in Tampa. During his residency, he specialized in orthopedic surgery. Dr. Hoski then completed a fellowship at the University of Miami in Florida, specializing in adult trauma and reconstructive spinal surgery. He completed a second fellowship at Miami Children’s Hospital in Florida, where his focus was spinal deformity. During this fellowship, he received advanced surgical training in the treatment of spinal deformity such as scoliosis (curvature of the spine) and spinal tumor. A fellowship is the highest level of training possible within a medical specialty.

Dr. Hoski acts as Assistant Consulting Professor of Orthopedics in the Department of Surgery at Duke University. He is board-certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery. He is a member of the American Medical Association, the North Carolina Medical Society and the Buncombe County Medical Society. He is a fellow in the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons.

With two fellowships, Dr. Hoski sees a variety of complex spine cases from across North Carolina.

Mark L. Moody, M.D., F.A.C.S.
Board-Certified Orthopedic Surgeon
Fellowship-Trained Spine Surgeon

Dr. Moody is a board-certified orthopedic surgeon, fellowship-trained in spine. Dr. Moody earned his medical degree from Georgetown University in Washington, D.C., where he graduated with honors. He was also elected into the Alpha Omega Alpha medical honor society during his junior year at Georgetown and received the Faustino R. Suarez, M.D., Award in the department of anatomy.

Dr. Moody completed his first year of residency in general surgery at Maricopa Medical Center and his second year of residency in orthopedic surgery in Phoenix, Arizona. During this residency, Dr. Moody was honored at the University of Arizona Symposium, where he earned the Best Basic Research Award. At both places of residency, Dr. Moody served as Chief Resident. He went on to specialize in spine by completing a fellowship in spine surgery at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Asheville.

Dr. Moody is board-certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery and is a member of the American Medical Association and the Buncombe County Medical Society. He is also a member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, the North American Spine Society and is a fellow in the American College of Surgeons.

Dr. Moody plays an active role in the Asheville community as a coach for girls' and boys' basketball teams. He also teaches Sunday school at Biltmore Methodist Church in Asheville.

Laura B. Fleck, MD
Board-Certified Neurologist
Specializing in nonsurgical back & neck care

Dr. Fleck is a board-certified neurologist at SpineCarolina, specializing in nonsurgical treatment of back and neck pain. Before movingto Asheville, Dr. Fleck directed the spine program at the prestigious Henry Ford Health System in Detroit, Michigan. During her career, Dr. Fleck played a key role in various spine care programs in Pennsylvania and Arizona.

After receiving her Bachelor of Science in chemistry from Albion College in Michigan, Dr. Fleck continued on to earn her medical degree from Northwestern University Medical School in Chicago. During that time, Dr. Fleck received many academic honors. She graduated magna cum laude, was an Albion Fellow Honorary and is a member of Phi Beta Kappa and Alpha Lambda Delta honor societies. Dr. Fleck completed her internship in internal medicine and a residency in neurology at Northwestern University. Subsequently, she became board-certified in neurology by the American Board of Neurology.

Dr. Fleck provides presentations and contributes articles for various medical journals on the subject of back and neck pain. Dr. Fleck is a member of the American Medical Association, the American Academy of Neurology, the American College of Physician Executives and the American Back Society.

At SpineCarolina, Dr. Fleck specializes in helping back and neck pain sufferers return to activity without surgery. Within the spine center, Dr. Fleck acts in the capacity of Medical Director over the rehabilitation team.
