About
SpineCarolina
SpineCarolina:
At last, a nonsurgical approach to back and neck care
Four
out of five Americans will have an attack of back pain during their lifetime.
Many people are doomed to years of endless visits to back doctors. That
is because once you have an attack of back pain, you are four times as
likely to have a recurrence. If you have back or neck pain, we are in
a position to help.
SpineCarolina
currently acts as a regional center of excellence for back and
neck problems. We receive some of the most complex cases of back
and neck pain from across North Carolina.
What
makes our spine center unique is its emphasis on a nonsurgical
approach to back and neck problems. SpineCarolina is directed
by specialists in physical medicine and rehabilitation, also
called physiatrists. These physicians have advanced training
in back and neck pain and often are successful in helping
people return to activity — without surgery.

At
the same time, if your back or neck problem requires surgery, SpineCarolina
has spine surgeons who already receive the area's most complex surgical
cases. These cases include herniated discs, spinal fractures, spinal
deformity, spinal tumor and scoliosis. These fellowship-trained
spine surgeons use
the most advanced instrumentation and spine surgery techniques available
such as the new artificial
disc.
In other words, SpineCarolina is able to take care of any type
of back or neck problem — from the simple back or neck
strain all the way to the most complex spine surgery involving
surgical instrumentation.
SpineCarolina is a multidisciplinary spine center
of excellence. It includes physical medicine and rehabilitation
physicians dedicated to nonsurgical management of spine and joint problems,
along with consulting spine surgeons who are fellowship-trained in spine.
It has physical therapy,
behavioral medicine services,
an injection suite, X-ray and MRI diagnostic
capabilities. SpineCarolina provides all the necessary diagnostic
testing and non-operative treatment in one place, eliminating the need
for multiple referrals, delayed care and overall confusion.
Also
available are specialized, intensive programs designed to improve functioning
and facilitate return to work for individuals who are significantly impaired
by their back or neck problems. These include the multidisciplinary Comprehensive
Functional Restoration Program and the unidisciplinary Work
Conditioning Program.
Medical care is directed by three board-certified specialists in physical
medicine and rehabilitation. Onsite diagnostic testing includes X-ray,
MRI, EMG-NCS and DEXA (bone density) scans. Treatment areas include physical
therapy, a therapeutic pool and a fully-certified ambulatory surgical
center for spinal injections under flouroscopic guidance.
